Taking a huge swig of my morning coffee, I realize that I let out an incredibly loud "MMMMM" as the tan liquid covered my tastebuds and trickled its way down the back of my throat. I closed my eyes and imagined sitting on my balcony on Saturday morning, watching my neighbors begin their days as the sun gets ready to heat up our parking lot. I love my weekend morning coffee routine, I look forward to it. But it wasn't always that way.
Truth be told, I didn't even START my morning coffee routine until I began working full time. For one, I never owned a coffee pot and two, I never really woke up until 10:00- 11:00 a.m. anyway and would usually start my day off with a Diet Pepsi. Then, on my trip home for this past Christmas, I found a brand new Mr. Coffee tucked away in the chaos that is my parents basement. I had a few other gifts that weren't able to make the trip on the plane back to Virginia, so I had my mother ship them to me, along with this amazing coffee pot.
When Mr. Coffee arrived, I took him out of the box, put all the pieces together, heck I even set the clock on the pot and just walked away. It sat on my kitchen counter for four months, having never been touched, Mr. Coffee felt all alone. Finally, one day, when my sister and brother in law came to visit, I coughed up some money to split coffee, creamer and filters so we could all enjoy coffee during their visit. Once I found out how to set the delay brew, I was hooked. "WHAT" I said "I can set that to go off at 7 a.m. and have it ready for me when I wake up?" This, my friends, was an amazing revelation!
Five years ago, this would have never been the case. So what changed? Did my tastebuds mature? Of course all the cool kids were drinking coffee, going on coffee dates, getting coffee after class, needing coffee to study. I've never really been affected by caffeine the way most people are. Except for the time I drank 3 MONSTER energy drinks before a statistics final and I couldn't stop shaking. I suppose I would force myself to drink the murky mixture until I became immune to the taste, because I wanted to be cool and fit in.
I assume this might be the same with beer. I HATED the taste of beer when I first started drinking alcohol. I didn't get why people would insist they torture themselves with the nastiness that is PBR. But then I started to like it, a lot. Not sure if it was because I was consuming it more frequently, or if I just decided that it wasn't so bad. Now I crave a Smithwicks every once in a while, or a Budweiser (none of that light crap.)
I like being an adult. It's pretty cool to be able to eat dessert before dinner, buy something you've always wanted if for no other reason just because you can. I think my Mr. Coffee is incredibly happy to be used for his intended purpose and not just as a night light for when I come home super late.
What is something you never liked when you were younger, but now that you're "grown" you like to eat/ drink it?
I remember grabbing my dad's soda when I was about 10 and chugging two full gulps before I realized it was rum and coke. I threw up.
ReplyDeleteNow, if I somehow find myself with extra money (Is there such thing as extra money?) or if someone else is paying, I'm very likely to order a Captain and Diet.
I started drinking coffee when I was about 12 because I was into Nirvana, who was from Seattle, and Seattle people are into coffee. Then I got into it.
It's good to see you drink good beer (Smithwicks).
WooHoo for blogging on a Friday morning.
Hahah 12 years old, oh my word!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, "tan liquid"? Kelly, my dear, as Matt can attest, you simply haven't had a cuppa joe till you've had it pure and unadulterated by sugar and cream.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a barista at Borders in my younger days, I once asked a customer if he wanted room for cream in his coffee. He replied. "No. I like my coffee the way I like my women -- bitter."
Furthermore, I agree with Matt that you have a superior taste in beer. Smithwicks is in my top 5. We should grab one at Blarney Stone sometime. Light beer is for pussies. (That's right, I just said that.)
Caffeinatedly,
Jess
I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE French Vanilla cream though, I can't live without it. And not that non fat crap either haha. You just said pussies, I'm telling Holden ;)
ReplyDeleteI am going to have to say spicy food. I would see people sweat, wipe their tears and blow their nosies - yuck. I really didn't like the sensation of killing your taste buds and then not having any taste after that. Nah, I am just a weeny. It wasn't until I started cooking Indian food from scratch that I allowed the spiciness back in. I would experiment with simmering a habanero pepper in the sauce and then fish it out before serving. One pepper became two and now I try different pepper variations!I am a true Asian now - boy do they eat spicy food!
