What makes music good? Is it good when you relate to the story? Is it good when the beat thumps through the boom box and makes you want to tap your toe? Is it good because it's played on the top 40 station?
I have terrible taste in music by most people's standards. But I don't go by most people's standards, I go by my own. How do I know when music is good. I know because I'm able to close my eyes, and suddenly I'm a part of the artist's story. When an musician is able to relate an emotion through a song, that is when it's good music. One of my favorite songs is Hallejulia and my favorite artist who sings it is Lee De Wyze (yeah, that American Idol guy.) I never watched this season, but I love his voice and that song.
This song below came to me via a mixtape from a dear friend of mine in Kansas. She sent me two CD's with her favorite chick bands on them (girl power, you know.) I first heard it as I was stuck in a traffic jam, on where else, but I-95. I was grumpy and not really paying attention to my music until this song came on. About half way through I caught myself rocking the drums on the steering wheel of my little Honda CRV and a few seconds later, I was full fledged rocking out all over my car. Banging on the roof, shaking my booty in my seat. And then the song was over and it was quite, and I was sad. There was only one thing to do, hit the replay button.
My rocking out started all over again and I could just see the lady behind me laughing as I'm sure she was curious as to what could make a girl move like me. Please copy and paste the link below into your browser and see what I'm talking about. If you don't like it, at least you tried something new for the day and you can go right back to listening to your hip hop or your country twang.
This may very well be my new ring tone :) Just saying.

Happiness hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her stuck still no turning back
She hid around corners and she hid under beds
She killed it with kisses and from it she fled
With every bubble she sank with her drink
And washed it away down the kitchen sink
The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming
So you better run
Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father
Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your longing behind
You cant carry it with you if you want to survive
The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
Because here they come
And I never wanted anything from you
Except everything you had and what was left after that too, oh
Happiness hit her like a bullet in the head
Struck from a great height by someone who should know better than that
The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
Because here they come
Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father
Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your loving, your loving behind
You cant carry it with you if you want to survive
The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
Because here they come
The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming
So you better run
I have that same problem with this song.
